How does
contamination occur?
Routes of exposure
Firefighters are exposed to contaminants by inhalation, ingestion and the cutaneous route. Certain conditions favor the absorption of these contaminants: elevated body temperature, skin humidity, and areas more sensitive to skin penetration such as the face and neck.
Contaminated material
At the end of the intervention, the risk of contamination is always present through inhalation during desorption of the material, through skin contact during indirect and direct contamination of the skin with soiled material, and through ingestion of soot when hands and mouth come into contact with contaminated hands.
Populations concerned
Exposure to contaminants doesn’t just concern firefighters in the vicinity of the fire. All professionals involved are affected, including fire engine operators and the entire chain of command, health, safety and public services personnel, logistical support and clean-up staff, etc.
